Our resident kangaroos

If you’ve ever spent time in our beautiful region or wandered through the bush in the Victorian goldfields, there’s a good chance you’ve caught sight of one of Australia’s most recognisable animals — the Eastern Grey Kangaroo. These marsupials are a common (and much-loved) part of our camp landscape. They are commonly seen on our oval at Adekate Camp and in the front dam paddock at Log Cabin Camp.

Eastern Grey Kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) are native to eastern and southern Australia, thriving in open woodlands, grasslands, and farmlands. The Goldfields region offers the perfect mix of habitats — with grassy clearings for grazing, shelter in scattered woodlands, and plenty of water sources in nearby creeks and dams.

While their fur is most often a soft grey-brown, giving them a subtle camouflage, their sheer size is anything but subtle. Adult males can stand over 2 metres tall when upright, and their muscular tails help them balance during their distinctive bounding movement. Females are generally smaller but just as agile.

Living alongside kangaroos means being mindful of their needs — and their habits. We always ask campers to keep a respectful distance while they enjoy watching the kangaroos grazing at camp.

We cannot wait for you to visit and see all the spectacular wildlife that frequent our camps
